South Africans have one final chance to register or update details this weekend before the 2026 local elections. The Electoral Commission of South Africa has outlined steps for voters ahead of the polls on 4 November. Special voting options remain available for those unable to reach stations on election day.
The final physical voter registration weekend takes place on 1-2 August at voting stations open from 8am to 5pm. Online registration stays open until the elections are proclaimed next month by Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa. Voters must update addresses before proclamation to ensure they appear on the correct roll.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said political parties hold responsibility for attracting youth to vote after registration. The commission focuses on administrative tasks such as placing voters on the correct roll and stations. He noted ongoing work with law enforcement to ensure free and fair elections.
Registered voters unable to attend on 4 November due to infirmity, pregnancy or disability may apply for special votes. Applications have not opened yet. Those abroad or travelling cannot vote by post and must attend their registered station in person.
