The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services continue efforts to contain a fire raging between Montagu and Barrydale in the Boland region. According to the municipality, challenging weather—marked by high temperatures and strong winds—has triggered multiple flare-ups in sections of the fire that were earlier contained.

Jo-Anne Otto, spokesperson for the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, indicated that the blaze does not currently endanger any infrastructure. Firefighters remain vigilant, closely monitoring the situation on the ground.

Otto provided further details: “The fire line has now extended into the Overberg District, where their fire services are on scene managing operations within their jurisdiction. A coordinated response remains in place. CWDM Fire Services and CapeNature fire vehicles and ground teams are being supported by the FPA, local farmers and their agri-workers and vehicles. The combination of inaccessibility, rugged terrain, high temperatures and increasing wind speeds continues to hamper suppression efforts. Firefighting, monitoring and mopping-up operations will continue throughout the night.”

This ongoing response highlights the collaborative efforts among various agencies and community members to manage the fire's spread across district boundaries. The difficult terrain and weather conditions are complicating suppression activities, but operations persist around the clock.
