Former minister Cyrus Jirongo dies in road accident

Former minister and Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo has died following a head-on collision with a bus on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The accident occurred on December 13, 2025, and Jirongo succumbed to severe head injuries at the scene. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

The fatal accident that claimed Cyrus Jirongo's life, aged 64, occurred at Karai on the Nakuru-Naivasha highway, part of the Nairobi-Nakuru route. According to a police report from Naivasha station, Jirongo was driving his Mercedes Benz, registration KCZ 305C, towards Nairobi from Nakuru. Upon reaching the scene, he lost control of the vehicle, veered into the oncoming lane, and collided head-on with a bus bearing registration KCU 576A owned by Climax Coaches.

The bus was driven by 52-year-old Tiras Kamau Githinji and was heading from Nairobi to Nakuru with 65 passengers on board. The bus driver stated that he saw Jirongo's vehicle entering his lane but could not avoid the collision without risking the bus overturning. "The Mercedes did not give way; the driver saw vehicles on his route and decided to come my way, resulting in the accident," the driver said.

Jirongo was alone in the car and died at the scene from severe head injuries. His body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Both vehicles were towed to the police station for further technical inspection. Jirongo, who served as Minister for Rural Development in 2002 under President Daniel Moi and as Lugari MP for two terms, has left leaders and citizens mourning his loss.

One report places the accident in the early morning, while another indicates evening hours. Police have stated that the cause is still under investigation.
