France’s ambassador to Algeria, Stéphane Romatet, said in an interview that he wants to return to issuing 250,000 visas per year to Algerian nationals.

Stéphane Romatet gave the interview on 14 July to the online outlet Tout sur l’Algérie. He said the mandate had been given to him by President Emmanuel Macron to rebuild a relationship based on trust with Algeria.

The ambassador returned to Algiers on 8 May, one year and one month after being recalled to France at the height of the diplomatic crisis. He took part that day in commemorations of the 1945 Sétif massacres.

He noted that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had confirmed the aim of putting the relationship back on track. The case of French journalist Christophe Gleizes was not raised during the interview.

Some users express anger with emojis or sarcasm about immigration impacts, while neutral posts simply report the ambassador's statements or confirm the visa target. No strongly positive sentiments were prominent.
