Gael Monfils was honored at a farewell ceremony titled “Gael and Friends” on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros on Thursday. His wife Elina Svitolina was moved to tears during the event. The 39-year-old Frenchman is set to play his final French Open match soon.
The ceremony took place as French Open draws were made at the Orangery Building. Roland Garros organized the tribute for Monfils, who holds a 70 percent win rate at the tournament and will compete there one last time. Svitolina sat in the stands watching with visible emotion as stars including Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner paid respects alongside former French players Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet.
