General Motors plans to drop Android Auto from vehicles

General Motors announced it will remove Android Auto from its electric vehicles and eventually all models. The company will replace it with its own system powered by Google's Gemini AI.

General Motors said the shift will give it access to vehicle data that Android Auto currently routes to Google. This includes navigation information that the automaker wants to use for better electric vehicle routing and charging.

The company also highlighted new features such as Dolby Atmos audio that it claims cannot be delivered through phone projection alone. GM noted its system will still support calls and streaming via built-in assistants.

Rivian and Tesla have long avoided Android Auto for similar reasons of control and data ownership. Both companies operate their own infotainment platforms built on Android Automotive OS.

Consumer reaction has included complaints over potential subscription fees for connected services once phone integration ends.
