Giants hire Casali and López as baseball operations advisors

San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has hired former teammates Curt Casali and Javier López as advisors to baseball operations. The team also promoted Paul Bien to assistant general manager of baseball analytics. The moves were announced on Friday.

The San Francisco Giants bolstered their front office on Friday with the addition of two familiar faces from their championship eras. Buster Posey, in his role as president of baseball operations, brought back catcher Curt Casali and reliever Javier López as advisors to baseball operations.

Casali, 37, enjoyed an 11-year Major League career, including stints with the Giants in 2021-22 and 2024. He served as Posey's backup during the Giants' franchise-record 107-win season in 2021, when they captured the NL West title. A Vanderbilt alumnus and 10th-round pick of the Tigers in 2011, Casali appeared in 543 big-league games across teams like Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Seattle, and San Francisco before retiring after the 2024 season and briefly joining the Reds' front office.

López, 48, spent seven of his 14 MLB seasons with the Giants as part of the 'Core Four' bullpen that contributed to World Series titles in 2010, 2012, and 2014. He posted a 2.47 ERA in 446 regular-season games for San Francisco and a 1.38 ERA in 13 postseason innings. Inducted into the Giants' Wall of Fame in 2024, López has worked as a color commentator for NBC Sports Bay Area since retiring in 2016 and plans to continue occasional broadcasts alongside his new duties.

In addition, Paul Bien, 39, was promoted from vice president of baseball analytics to assistant general manager, baseball analytics. Bien, who joined the Giants in 2012 after earning degrees from UCLA, oversees data and technology integration for scouting, player development, and coaching staffs, with a focus on player acquisitions. He becomes the second assistant GM under Posey and general manager Zack Minasian, joining Jeremy Shelley.

These hires join a strong advisory group including Bruce Bochy, Dusty Baker, Bobby Evans, John Barr, Ron Wotus, and Jeff Berry, enhancing the Giants' baseball operations.
