Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate Geordin Hill-Lewis unveiled five pledges on Saturday aimed at making Cape Town safer, cleaner and more affordable ahead of November elections.
Hill-Lewis made the announcement in Hanover Park while declaring his candidacy for a second term as mayor of the City of Cape Town. He said the pledges build on the party's track record and include stronger policing through a new Metro Police Detective Unit, creation of more jobs by cutting red tape, reliable and affordable services with reduced reliance on Eskom, expanded affordable housing via private sector partnerships and release of city land, and cleaner public spaces.
South Africa will hold municipal elections on 4 November 2026. Hill-Lewis noted that Cape Town had already delivered more homes than any other city in the country over the past four and a half years, according to national housing ministry data, and created 480,000 new jobs in the same period.
The candidate also committed to upgrading informal settlements, replacing 100 kilometres of fresh water and sewer pipes each year, and protecting communities from unlawful land occupation. He emphasised keeping costs low for residents amid high living expenses.
