The sci-fi blockbuster "Hope" topped the South Korean box office in its opening weekend. It drew more than 1.5 million admissions from Friday to Sunday, data showed Monday.
"Hope" added 1,504,013 admissions over the weekend, bringing its total to 2,129,720 as of Sunday, according to the Korean Film Council. It broke the two-million mark on its fifth day of release, the fastest pace among films released this year.
The film competed at this year's Cannes Film Festival. It marks director Na Hong-jin's return a decade after "The Wailing" (2016) and features a cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.
Hollywood animation "Minions & Monsters" ranked second with 308,576 admissions. "Moana" took third place with 173,555 admissions, followed by "Toy Story 5" with 114,718.
