Japan confirms Moriyasu coaching succession plan

Japan has confirmed that national team coach Hajime Moriyasu will remain in charge until the end of the 2027 Asian Cup. He will then be succeeded by Go Oiwa, the current Under-21 coach.

The Japanese Football Association announced the succession on July 23. Moriyasu will lead the Samurai Blue through the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, where the team aims to win the tournament for the fifth time since last claiming the title in 2011.

Oiwa will take over afterward while continuing his duties with the Under-21 and Under-23 sides. His immediate focus includes guiding the youth teams toward qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Moriyasu assumed the senior role in July 2018. He guided Japan to the 2019 Asian Cup final and a strong 2022 World Cup group stage performance before the team exited the 2026 tournament in the round of 32 following a loss to Brazil.
