Las Vegas police deploy donated Tesla Cybertruck fleet

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has officially rolled out 10 customized Tesla Cybertrucks for patrol duties along the Las Vegas Strip. Donated by venture capitalist Ben Horowitz and his wife Felicia, the vehicles were upfitted for enhanced safety and are being used to boost recruitment. This marks the first full Cybertruck fleet in U.S. law enforcement.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) began deploying its new fleet of 10 Tesla Cybertrucks on October 19, 2025, following months of testing and public demonstrations. The all-electric vehicles, customized for patrol and SWAT use, will operate along the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding areas. Donated earlier this year by Ben Horowitz and his wife Felicia, the trucks required no taxpayer funding, with the donation first announced in February.

The Cybertrucks were upfitted by UP.FIT, a California-based division of Unplugged Performance specializing in Tesla conversions for fleets and emergency services. Each features reinforced armor, bullet-resistant protection, and advanced onboard technology to enhance officer safety and effectiveness.

LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill emphasized the vehicles' protective qualities: “We want these things because the cops inside will be safe no matter what. These stop bullets. They are also a tremendous recruitment tool for us.” To leverage this, the department launched a marketing campaign, including wraparound ads on buses near the Las Vegas airport. UP.FIT CEO Ben Schaffer highlighted the effort on X: “Next level police recruiting!” accompanied by an image of the campaign.

This deployment positions Las Vegas as the first U.S. city to integrate a full Cybertruck fleet into law enforcement. Internationally, the Jalisco State Police in Mexico added three Cybertrucks in August as mobile intelligence units ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Tesla's official Cybertruck account reacted playfully on X, posting, “Does that technically make me Robocop?” to which CEO Elon Musk replied, “Pretty much,” on October 18, 2025.

Tesla also offers an Armor Package for civilian Cybertrucks, improving durability and off-road performance.
