Three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats on Tuesday. The victories unseated two incumbents in heavily Democratic districts.
Brad Lander defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th Congressional District. Claire Valdez won the 7th District nomination. Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District.
The winners had criticized Israel over the war in Gaza and received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America. Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, had endorsed all three.
Rep. Ritchie Torres won his primary in the 15th District. Micah Lasher prevailed in the 12th District. Some Democratic leaders described the results as a setback for the party establishment.
Ro Khanna welcomed the outcomes and called for a bolder party platform. John Fetterman criticized several winners as part of the “dirtbag left.”
