A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to psychiatric care with special discharge review after attempting to spy for Russia in autumn 2025.
Stockholm District Court ruled that the man, who previously worked as an IT consultant at the Swedish Armed Forces between 2018 and 2022, attempted to reveal secret information to Russian authorities. He traveled to Moscow among other things to establish contact with the intelligence services FSB and GRU and offered to hand over information in exchange for protection and future Russian citizenship.
The man is convicted of attempted espionage and two cases of harassment. The latter involved him following a security guard at the Swedish Defence Radio Establishment, FRA, between the guard's home and workplace. Court president Magdalena Hägg Bergvall stated that the prosecutor had proven that the man attempted to reveal information covered by the espionage provision.
The man has denied the crimes and claimed he was persecuted and blackmailed by FRA. A forensic psychiatric investigation from earlier this summer showed that he suffers from a serious mental disorder. He remains suspected of conspiracy to murder in December 2025, an investigation that is ongoing.
