Mexican actress Alicia Bonet dies at 78

Mexican actress Alicia Bonet, known for her role as Claudia in the horror film 'Hasta el viento tiene miedo', died on October 26 at age 78. Her death was confirmed by the National Association of Interpreters (ANDI), though the cause remains undisclosed. Bonet left a legacy in Mexican cinema after a career spanning over 40 years.

Alicia Bonet Ceballos was born on April 26, 1947, in Mexico City. From an early age, she joined a children's theater company in the late 1950s, making her professional debut in the film 'Socio de Alcoba' in 1962 at age 15. She became a prominent figure in Mexican horror cinema, with roles in films like 'Hasta el viento tiene miedo' (1968), where she played Claudia, a genre classic that had a remake in which Bonet reappeared as the character's mother. Other notable films include 'El Escapulario' (1968), 'Los jinetes de la bruja' (1966), 'Despedida de soltera' (1966), and 'Los inocentes' (1963). She appeared in around 30 films over her 40-year career, with intermittent TV roles in shows like 'Mujer, casos de la vida real' and 'Lo que la gente cuenta'. Her last project was an episode of 'Como dice el dicho' in 2010.

In her personal life, Bonet married twice. First, in the early 1970s, to actor Juan Ferrara, with whom she had two sons: Juan Carlos and Mauricio, both pursuing artistic careers. The marriage ended in divorce. She later wed actor Claudio Brook, with whom she had Arturo and Gabriel. Brook died in 1995 from stomach cancer. In 2004, her son Gabriel died by suicide at age 29 after jumping from a fourth-floor window, an event that deeply affected Bonet and led her to gradually withdraw from the spotlight, taking few projects thereafter.

The ANDI confirmed her death on social media: “We communicate the sensitive passing of our associate interpreter Alicia Bonet, remembered for her participation in films like Hasta el viento tiene miedo (horror and suspense film) and Despedida de soltera. We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.” Actors such as Ana Patricia Rojo and Maribel Guardia expressed condolences. Bonet, who had retired from public life, leaves a legacy intertwined with art and personal losses that shaped her career.
