Two mining companies announced progress on gold projects in the Maricunga corridor in Chile's Atacama region. President José Antonio Kast also backed Kinross's Lobo Marte project.

The Maricunga corridor, a 200-kilometer stretch between Copiapó and the Argentine border, is drawing attention for gold developments. Flagship Minerals reported on May 14 an estimate of 115.2 million tonnes of resources containing 2.1 million ounces of gold at Isidora Norte.

Over 90% of the resource falls into measured and indicated categories. Managing director Paul Lock said it marks a transformational milestone and that the project emerges at the right time amid improved Chilean mining policy.

Tiernan Gold hired Ausenco for the pre-feasibility study of its Volcán project, which already holds 9.8 million ounces of measured and indicated gold. Kinross's Lobo Marte project, with an estimated US$3 billion investment, is advancing through environmental permitting in the communes of Copiapó and Tierra Amarilla.

The initiative divides Chilean opposition and prompts reactions from Peru and Bolivia. Ministers outlined 500 km coverage along the northern border.

Chile's FNE and antitrust bodies from China, Brazil, and South Korea have approved the joint Andina-Los Bronces mining plan between Codelco and Anglo American. The deal, signed in February 2025, will enable 120,000 additional tonnes of fine copper per year from 2030 to 2051. Codelco board chairman Máximo Pacheco said it will unlock greater potential in the mining district.

Colombian mining company Mineros S.A. announced it has obtained environmental certification for the processing plant and tailings deposit of the Porvenir project in Nicaragua. This milestone enables progress toward detailed engineering and future construction. The project holds reserves of 736,000 equivalent gold ounces.

Deputy Minister Daniel Mas condemned Codelco's overestimation of nearly 27,000 tons of copper production in 2025. The internal audit revealed deviations at the Chuquicamata and Ministro Hales divisions.
