Mitch Marner's agent details Toronto Maple Leafs rift origins

Darren Ferris, agent for Mitch Marner, discussed the early roots of his client's split from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a recent interview. The issues began during Marner's rookie contract negotiations rather than the 2019 talks often cited publicly.

Ferris told The PuckPedia Hockey Show that former general manager Lou Lamoriello declined significant performance bonuses for rookies. This policy affected Marner and William Nylander, though Auston Matthews received different terms upon signing in 2016.

Marner signed his rookie deal without the bonuses against his agent's advice. Ferris said Toronto promised equal treatment on bonuses but later broke that commitment.

In 2019 contract talks Marner sought the same annual salary as Matthews at 11.639 million dollars. Leaks during negotiations drew heavy criticism toward Marner, including social media threats against him and his family.

Marner later joined the Vegas Golden Knights and led the playoffs in points during their run to the Stanley Cup Final last season.
