More than half of France sets monthly heat records in May

Météo-France announced on Friday that more than half the country recorded at least one monthly heat record between 23 and 27 May.

The early heat episode has been described as unprecedented from a meteorological and climatic standpoint. Around 109 monthly minimum temperature records and 266 monthly maximum temperature records were logged during this period.

Matthieu Sorel, a climatologist at Météo-France, stated that the episode was colossal. He added that the heatwave should gradually ease by the weekend.

The agency noted that the records involved both minimum and maximum temperatures across many regions.
