Myanmar president assures india on security concerns during modi meeting

Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his country would not allow its territory to be used against India’s security interests. The assurance came during a bilateral meeting in Delhi on Monday. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed reporters afterward on the discussions.

Min Aung Hlaing is on a visit to India from May 30 to June 3. It is his first trip since he became President in April. The leaders discussed defence cooperation, critical minerals, and connectivity projects such as the Kaladan multimodal transit transport project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.

Modi raised the case of detained Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Misri said the talks touched on the need for inclusion of all stakeholders in Myanmar’s peace process. India also announced an increase in Mekong Ganga ICCR scholarships for Myanmar students from 36 to 100 starting in 2026.

Misri noted that more than 2,400 Indian citizens have been repatriated from cyber scam compounds in Myanmar over the past 18 months. Around 150 others remain in the compounds. The President will travel to Mumbai on Tuesday after meetings with President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
