National gasoline prices climb back above $4.00

Gasoline prices rose for a second straight week and returned above $4.00 per gallon as of July 20. The national average for regular reached exactly $4.00 while premium averaged $4.96.

Prices increased 15 cents for regular and 14 cents for premium over the prior week. This marked the first time the national average exceeded $4.00 in more than a month.

Regional differences remained wide. California posted the highest average at $5.51 while Indiana recorded the lowest at $3.36, creating a $2.15 gap.

West Texas light crude oil prices rose 5.6 percent from the previous week, contributing to the upward pressure on pump prices.

AAA’s daily state averages show that gasoline prices in late May 2026 were generally higher in several Democratic-led states—particularly on the West Coast—than in many Republican-led states, reflecting a mix of state fuel taxes, boutique fuel requirements, supply constraints and broader oil-market forces.

Gasoline prices stayed largely unchanged this week, remaining at their highest levels in nearly four years. The national average for regular fuel reached $4.49 per gallon as of May 18.

Motorists in the Philippines should prepare for higher diesel costs next week as pump prices are projected to increase by P2 to P4 per liter starting July 14. The expected adjustment stems from recent global oil market movements and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
