NIT Calicut wins overall title at Inter-NIT athletics and chess tournament

The All-India Inter-NIT Athletics and Chess Tournament 2025-26 concluded at NIT Jalandhar with NIT Calicut claiming the overall championship. The host institution, NIT Jalandhar, delivered a strong performance, highlighted by Nasim Akhtar being named the best athlete. A total of 22 NITs participated in the three-day event.

The three-day All-India Inter-NIT Athletics and Chess Tournament 2025-26 wrapped up with a grand closing ceremony at the athletic field of Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar. NIT Calicut emerged as the overall champion, while the host NIT Jalandhar impressed with notable achievements across various events.

NIT Jalandhar's athletes shone brightly. Nasim Akhtar secured the gold medal in the 100-metre women's race and was declared the best athlete of the tournament. The men's team from NIT Jalandhar won gold in the 4×400-metre relay. In the women's 1500-metre event, Nidhi Yadav claimed gold, with Muskan earning silver for the host institute.

Men's events also saw strong showings from NIT Jalandhar. Ravi took silver in the 400-metre hurdles, and Abhishek Kumar won silver in the 10,000-metre race. However, gold in the 400-metre hurdles went to Manish Saveda of NIT Allahabad, and Gaurav Meena of NIT Jaipur triumphed in the 10,000-metre men's race. In the high jump, Anita Meena of NIT Jalandhar secured silver, while M Awasthi KP from NIT Calicut claimed gold.

The closing ceremony was attended by Professor Vinod Kumar Kanaujia, director of NIT Jalandhar, who served as chief guest. He congratulated the winners and praised the students' committee, saying they managed the tournament 'with great efficiency and perfection.'

This event brought together 22 NITs from across India, fostering competition in athletics and chess.

Participation increased significantly by 2025, with deeper institutional and family involvement. These events are establishing a strong grassroots foundation for chess in India.

Indian players dominated the Muscat Nights International Chess Championship 2026, securing victories across major categories as the 10-day tournament wrapped up at Al Amal Club Hall in Muscat on Friday.
