Office 2019 for Mac to enter reduced functionality mode

Starting July 13, Microsoft Office 2019 apps on Mac will stop allowing users to edit, save or create files. The change stems from an expiring security certificate that the company did not update for this version. Only viewing and printing will remain available.

The affected applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. The same restrictions will apply to outdated versions of the apps on iPhone and iPad. Microsoft said the product cannot receive the renewed certificate because no update path exists for an out-of-support product. Office 2019 for Mac was released in September 2018 and ended official support in October 2023. Microsoft renewed the certificate for other versions of Office but left the 2019 Mac edition unchanged. Windows versions of the software are not affected. Customers using Microsoft 365 or Office 2021 must update their software before July to avoid similar issues. The final one-time purchase version for Mac is Office 2024, which continues to receive support.
