Ogun governor to return missionary schools to original owners

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced plans to return missionary schools to their original owners during a meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria. He emphasised the need for partnerships with faith-based organisations in education and development. Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty commended the governor's support for religious harmony.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed on Friday that his administration will return all missionary schools in the state to their original owners. He made the announcement while receiving Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The meeting also included Catholic Bishops Peter Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta and Francis Obafemi Adesina of Ijebu-Ode.

Abiodun highlighted the contributions of religious bodies to education and health, stating, “We will return all missionary schools to their owners. It is not our policy to do it alone. We need to join hands with private individuals, and we encourage further partnership with the Church to expand development.” He noted Ogun State's role as a hub of religious harmony, with about 1.2 million Catholics contributing to peace and progress.

The governor added, “The services rendered by religious bodies help in achieving peace in the state. Our people believe you more than politicians because they believe politicians make promises without fulfilling them.”

Archbishop Crotty praised Abiodun for providing a stable environment for the Church, saying, “Your provision of a stable and supportive political environment has significantly enhanced the mission of the Catholic Church in your state, and we are grateful for that.” He urged continued collaboration in health and education and expressed optimism about the return of Catholic schools.
