Ovechkin nears 900th NHL goal in matchup with Blues

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will have another opportunity to score his 900th NHL goal when his team hosts the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday. The Capitals enter the game with a 6-5-1 record, facing a Blues squad at 4-7-2 amid several injury challenges for Washington.

Alex Ovechkin, who passed Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history with 894 last season, has scored two goals in 12 games this season after tallying 44 in 2024-25. The Capitals captain gets his next chance at the milestone when Washington hosts the St. Louis Blues at Capital One Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET (HBO MAX, MNMT, truTV, TNT).

The Capitals have faced setbacks early in 2025-26, including the extended absence of forward Pierre-Luc Dubois due to a lower-body injury. Dubois returned from injury for three games but was hurt again in the first period of a 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Friday. Washington coach Spencer Carbery said Tuesday, "No, we do not think it's going to be season-ending, just an extended period of time at this point." Dubois is expected to return this season.

On a positive note, defenseman Rasmus Sandin will return to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury. Sandin had been practicing in a noncontact jersey and is set to play against the Blues.

The Blues, at 4-7-2, look to improve against a Capitals team that has struggled compared to last season's success. This game marks another key opportunity for Ovechkin to add to his legacy in a nationally televised matchup.
