Swedish defenseman Philip Broberg has agreed to a six-year, $48 million contract extension with the St. Louis Blues, securing his future with the team through his prime years. The deal, announced on Saturday, carries an average annual value of $8 million and begins next season. Broberg, recently named to Sweden's roster for the 2026 Olympics, has been a standout performer in his second season with the Blues.

St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong announced on Saturday that the team has signed defenseman Philip Broberg to a six-year contract extension worth $48 million, with an average annual value of $8 million. The agreement begins next season and keeps the 24-year-old Swede with the Blues through the 2031-32 season. Broberg signed with the Blues as a restricted free agent on August 20, 2024, after the Edmonton Oilers declined to match an offer sheet tendered by St. Louis on August 13.

In his second season with the Blues, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound Broberg has appeared in all 45 games, recording 14 points (two goals and 12 assists) along with six penalty minutes. Last season, he set career highs with 29 points (eight goals and 21 assists) in 68 regular-season games, leading the Blues defensemen with a plus-21 rating. Over his NHL career, Broberg has played 194 regular-season games for the Oilers and Blues, accumulating 56 points (12 goals and 44 assists), 32 penalty minutes, and a plus-16 rating. He has also logged 27 playoff games, including 10 during Edmonton's run to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

"It's exciting to have him for this year plus six more that basically takes him right through the meat of his prime years," Armstrong said. "He's been one of the few bright lights in a season that hasn't gone anywhere near the way we expected. He's a player on the back end I think we can build around."

Armstrong highlighted Broberg's contributions across special teams and even-strength play, noting his growing role on the power play. "A cornerstone player on the back end that it's nice to have in the fold," he added.

Originally drafted eighth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2019, Broberg hails from Örebro, Sweden, and recently earned a spot on Team Sweden for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina. The Blues, currently holding a 17-20-8 record, face the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night.

The deal provides stability to the Devils' goaltending tandem alongside Jake Allen.

The St. Louis Blues enter the Christmas break with a disappointing 14-16-8 record, grappling with injuries, poor goaltending and offensive struggles.
