PorteuX 2.5 Linux distribution launches with kernel and desktop updates

The Slackware-based PorteuX 2.5 Linux distribution has been released, featuring the Linux 6.18 kernel and support for eight desktop environments. Designed for speed and portability, it includes enhancements like Flatpak app support and improved hardware compatibility. This update builds on its modular and immutable architecture inspired by Slax and Porteus.

PorteuX 2.5, a lightweight Linux distribution rooted in Slackware, arrived on December 26, 2025, emphasizing its core strengths: super fast performance, small footprint, portability, modularity, and immutability. At its heart is the latest Linux 6.18 kernel series, complete with SYSRQ support, enabling robust system management.

The release offers eight editions tailored to different user preferences, each powered by updated desktop environments. These include GNOME 49.2 for a modern interface, KDE Plasma 6.5.4 for customization, Cinnamon 6.6 for a traditional feel, LXQt 2.3 for efficiency, the new COSMIC 1.0 from System76, Xfce 4.20 for lightness, LXDE 0.11.1 for minimalism, and MATE 1.28.2 for stability.

Key improvements enhance usability and compatibility. It now supports select Realtek network cards and the NVIDIA 590.48.01 graphics driver. Flatpak app integration allows easier access to third-party software. Other tweaks include better cheatcode handling, optimized stripping for smaller sizes, enhanced NTFS3 partition support, and improved KVM virtualization.

Specific editions see targeted fixes: the LXQt version includes a patch to notify the windowing system about X11 or Wayland usage, while LXDE benefits from refined Openbox defaults, a resolution for volume plugin freezes, and proper color switching for panel items between dark and light themes.

Broader enhancements cover gaming and system reliability. Vulkan support has been bolstered for a smoother Steam experience, timezone handling for UTC setups is refined, and issues like /.cache directory creation and zram cheatcode functionality in configuration files are addressed. The ensurepip package is newly added for Python convenience.

As with prior releases, PorteuX 2.5 incorporates upstream package updates and bug fixes. Users can download it from the project's site, alongside Slackware Current flavors, and consult the GitHub release notes for full details. This iteration reinforces PorteuX's appeal for users seeking a nimble, customizable Linux option without bloat.
