Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez is recovering from an illness that delayed his return from the 15-day injured list. He threw a side session on Friday and could be activated as soon as Sunday.
Suarez had been scheduled to return from a left groin strain earlier in the week. An illness that limited his eating for a couple of days put those plans on hold. The team hopes he can start against the Athletics when their series opens Monday night in Sacramento.
Interim manager Chad Tracy said the sickness has improved and described Sunday as an option. He added that the club will monitor Suarez’s strength and progress before committing to a start. Payton Tolle remains lined up if needed.
Rookie left-hander Connelly Early also worked out on Friday. The pitcher, sidelined since July 1 with left shoulder inflammation, threw a bullpen inning and played catch to 120 feet. His next steps include a two-inning bullpen session and a possible minor league rehab assignment.
Patrick Sandoval, back from Tommy John surgery, started Friday against the Blue Jays. Brayan Bello has pitched in relief while the rotation deals with absences.
