Angelo Martino received a 70-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to colluding with the BlackCat ransomware group. He helped extort more than $75 million from victims between April 2023 and his arrest.
Martino worked for DigitalMint, a firm hired by ransomware victims to negotiate payments. Court records show he shared confidential details with BlackCat attackers to increase ransom demands. Five victims paid between $213,000 and $26.8 million each.
The government seized $10 million in assets linked to the scheme. Martino and two co-conspirators also deployed ransomware themselves against some targets, including a medical device company that paid $1.2 million. The co-conspirators were each sentenced to 48 months earlier.
Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI Cyber Division, said Martino sold out the victims he was hired to represent. Martino must pay 10 percent of his future earnings to compensate those affected.
