Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has retired from international football following his country's elimination from the World Cup. The 35-year-old made the announcement after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32.
Mahrez ended a 12-year career with Algeria that included 120 caps and 40 goals. He spoke after the match in Vancouver, saying the loss came on errors that proved costly at this level.
The forward confirmed the game marked the end of his time with the national team. "It's my last appearance even with the national team. It was my last game," he said.
Mahrez leaves as Algeria's second-most capped player and second-highest scorer. He captained the side to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title and recorded three goal involvements during the 2026 World Cup.
