Roethlisberger recommends Steelers keep Howard and Allar

Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said the team should retain Will Howard and Drew Allar rather than Mason Rudolph to build long-term options behind Aaron Rodgers.

Roethlisberger made the comments Tuesday on his Footbahlin’ podcast. He argued that two young quarterbacks offer the best chance to identify a future starter, noting Rodgers has indicated he plans to retire after the 2026 season.

Bob Labriola, editor of Steelers.com, said he does not expect the team to carry four quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster. He noted similarities to the 1995 situation but stressed the current era and coaching staff make that approach unlikely.

The Steelers open training camp next week at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. Decisions on the quarterback room will be made during camp and the preseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers beat writers offered differing views on whether Will Howard will secure the backup quarterback job behind Aaron Rodgers this season.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard has demonstrated noticeable improvement during spring practices, according to veteran beat writer Gerry Dulac. The second-year player, selected in the sixth round out of Ohio State last year, appears more confident and fluid in his movements.

Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo said the team is likely to move veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph to the practice squad early in the season. The Steelers currently have four quarterbacks on the roster but only three available spots.

Former NFL general manager Doug Whaley believes the Pittsburgh Steelers may try to keep quarterback Mason Rudolph on their practice squad this season. The idea stems from recent league rule changes that allow teams more flexibility with veteran players.
