Ruto pushes for new UDA-ODM pact after Arati's rejoin call

Following ODM deputy Simba Arati's recent overture in Eldoret, President William Ruto has called for a strengthened Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to negotiate a new agreement for a 2027 coalition government.

Building on ODM deputy leader Simba Arati's December 15 call in Eldoret for President Ruto to rejoin ODM and bolster the Government of National Unity, Ruto addressed the 5th Piny Luo Festival in Migori on December 17, 2025. He publicly declared his intention to form a new agreement with ODM for the 2027 government, urging the party to unite and build strength for effective bargaining.

"I am calling on the ODM party to strategise itself and remain strong. We want a strong ODM so that we can plan Kenyan affairs together," Ruto said. He added, "If you make ODM stronger, I will also make my party UDA stronger so that we can meet and form a government through an agreement."

Ruto reminisced about his past in ODM under the late Raila Odinga, crediting him for his political rise: "I was a member of ODM, but God made me even more successful so that I can meet with ODM again. Raila is the one who taught us politics. I was his best student, and he immensely contributed to my presidency."

This follows Ruto's recent shift toward ODM after Odinga's death, including praise at the party's Founders' dinner in Mombasa on November 16.

Winnie Odinga, youngest daughter of the late Raila Odinga, has accused ODM leaders of trying to oust dissatisfied members. Speaking at a rally in Kibera, Nairobi, she stressed the need for dialogue and unity within the party. This comes as ODM negotiates potential coalitions with UDA ahead of the 2027 elections.

On December 15, 2025, ODM deputy leader Simba Arati led a large party meeting in Eldoret, urging President William Ruto to abandon UDA and return to ODM to bolster the Government of National Unity. He pledged continued cooperation with the government, emphasizing ODM's nationwide roots.

The Orange Democratic Movement has announced plans to open structured negotiations with other political formations, including the United Democratic Alliance, ahead of the next general election. This decision was reached on Monday, January 12, following a meeting of the ODM Central Committee held in Kilifi County. The talks aim to strengthen the party's national footing through pre-election alliances.

Following Raila Odinga's exit from politics, Kenya's opposition faces significant challenges in building unity and preparing for the 2027 elections. Various parties are attempting to form alliances, but internal divisions and competition are undermining their strength. Analysts indicate that unity will be key to success.

Divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have deepened after a group calling itself G8 condemned party leader Oburu Oginga for actions stirring splits. Led by Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, the faction criticized Oginga's side for prioritizing personal interests. G8 leaders warned of forming another group if the Kakamega branch dispute remains unresolved.

Building on party leader Oburu Oginga's recent call for unity, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MPs have urged him to address worsening tensions, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna's clash with MP Junet Mohamed over election funds and a gun incident involving MPs Babu Owino and MCA Robert Alai.
