Scaloni discusses Messi injury and squad fitness ahead of World Cup

Coach Lionel Scaloni spoke on Tuesday about Lionel Messi's muscle injury and the physical condition of several players ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Scaloni stated that the initial news about Messi's injury is not so bad. The captain felt pain in the back of his left leg during Inter Miami's match against Philadelphia Union and was substituted at the 72-minute mark.

The coach noted that tests indicate muscle fatigue overload, with an estimated recovery time of two to seven days. “A todos nos hubiese gustado que llegue sin problemas”, Scaloni said in an interview with Dsports.

Besides Messi, Scaloni mentioned other players arriving with physical issues. These include Emiliano Martínez, Cristian Romero, Nicolás González, Nahuel Molina, Gonzalo Montiel, Nico Paz and Marcos Acuña. The only confirmed absence is Juan Foyth.

Argentina will play two friendly matches before the World Cup: facing Honduras on June 6 in Texas and Iceland on June 9 in Alabama.
