The search for a missing 17-year-old teenager in the Vaal River entered its third day as Gauteng police deployed specialized units to scour the waterway. The incident occurred during a boat cruise where the boy was accompanied by friends and the father of one of them. He was reported missing on Friday evening, prompting an immediate response from authorities.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo detailed the timeline, stating, “It is suspected that he fell from a boat and the Search and Rescue team was dispatched on Saturday and Sunday to conduct a search. The teenager has not yet been found and the search is still underway.” Members of the South African Police Service’s Water Wing and Search and Rescue Unit are leading the operation, utilizing boats and divers to cover the river's challenging terrain.
The Vaal River, a vital waterway in Gauteng, has been the site of several water-related incidents in recent years, underscoring the risks associated with recreational activities on its waters. Police emphasized their commitment to exhausting all resources in the effort to recover the boy, whose body they believe is in the river. As of Monday, no breakthroughs had been reported, keeping the family and community in suspense.
