Senator Andrea Chávez requests Senate leave to seek Chihuahua governorship

Chihuahua Senator Andrea Chávez requested Senate leave to fully pursue the Morena candidacy for state governor in the 2027 elections. She stated that the current government has abandoned people amid poverty, inequality, and unprecedented insecurity. President Claudia Sheinbaum reminded that all candidates must follow party rules.

On Tuesday, April 15, the Senate's Steering Committee announced Senator Andrea Chávez's leave request. Morena and allied senators praised her, predicting she will be the next governor.

In a radio interview with Azucena Uresti, Chávez said Chihuahua suffers from poverty, inequality, unemployment, and unprecedented insecurity levels. "We are at a stellar moment in Chihuahua with the possibility of generating a shift toward progressivism, toward a project of rights, toward a project for people sunk in poverty", she stated. She added that during house-to-house visits, residents urged her to focus fully on the state.

As head of the Welfare Commission, Chávez acknowledged the Senate needs full-time legislators, but "Chihuahua also needs someone fully dedicated, and that is who I want to be". On X, she posted: "Today I leave the Senate to personally tackle ending 100 years of PRIAN in Chihuahua. The Chihuahua Spring is coming!".

On Thursday, April 16, during her morning briefing, President Claudia Sheinbaum said: "Everyone is very good, there are rules" to follow. She recalled reprimanding Chávez in 2025 for early campaigning, such as distributing ambulances with her image. Chihuahua is currently governed by Maru Campos of the PAN-PRD alliance.

Citlalli Hernández stepped down as head of the Secretariat for Women in President Claudia Sheinbaum's cabinet to become president of Morena's National Elections Commission. The appointment, announced by party leader Luisa María Alcalde on April 16 and approved by the National Executive Committee, aims to strengthen alliances with the Green Party (PVEM) and Labor Party (PT) ahead of the 2027 midterm elections, amid efforts to resolve local tensions.

In an update to the April 18 crash that killed two Mexican officials and two CIA agents during a joint drug lab operation in Chihuahua, President Claudia Sheinbaum demanded explanations from state authorities and the US ambassador, calling unauthorized US involvement a 'violation of the law.' Mexico's Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) announced it will run without alliance with Morena for the San Luis Potosí governorship in 2027, with Senator Ruth González Silva positioned as its top candidate. The move stems from PVEM's strength in the state and Morena's weakness, labeled the third force by González herself. It comes amid nepotism restrictions blocking her Morena candidacy.

The Chamber of Deputies rejected President Claudia Sheinbaum's electoral reform on March 11, 2026, failing to reach the required qualified majority. With 259 votes in favor and 234 against, the initiative was defeated due to opposition from allies like PT and PVEM. Ricardo Monreal from Morena announced that the party will prepare a 'Plan B' to advance it.
