An incorrect mix of chemicals at the municipal pool in La Bisbal del Penedès (Tarragona) has left 17 injured, four of them serious. The town hall recommended residents stay indoors due to a toxic cloud.
The incident occurred at 14:12 on July 10, 2026. Firefighters received an alert about a chemical reaction and evacuated the pool, where between 20 and 25 swimmers were present. The Emergency Medical System treated 17 people, ten of whom were taken to hospitals.
Acting mayor Judit Vidal explained that the maintenance company made an error when mixing the products. Mayor Agnès Ferré noted that the chlorine would evaporate within hours. The town hall recommended closing doors and windows and avoiding unnecessary outings.
The pool will remain closed today and tomorrow until full safety is guaranteed. Firefighters are cleaning the tanks and no injuries have been reported outside the facility.
