Severe thunderstorms expected in Gauteng tonight and Tuesday

The South African Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms across Gauteng starting tonight, with heavy rain, possible flooding, and large hail anticipated. Northern areas face the most widespread impacts, and the storms are set to continue into Tuesday with cooler temperatures. Residents are urged to prepare for disruptive weather.

The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms affecting Gauteng tonight. Forecasters predict heavy downpours, localised flooding, and large hail as unstable conditions build across the province.

Senior Forecaster Samkelisiwe Thwala explained the outlook: “Weather-wise for tonight, we are starting with mostly scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Gauteng province. However, we are expecting widespread showers and thundershowers over the Northern part for tonight. We also have a warning associated with these thunderstorms over Gauteng where we are expecting Yellow Level 4 for severe thunderstorms that are accompanied by heavy downpours, possible flooding as well as large amounts of hail that is expected to persist for the remainder of the evening.”

The storms are forecast to linger into Tuesday, featuring scattered showers and thundershowers province-wide, alongside cooler temperatures. Thwala added: “We are (expecting) mostly scattered showers and thundershowers across the province. Cool temperatures can be expected also expecting Level 4 Warning for the northeastern part for severe thunderstorms and a Yellow Level 2 Warning across the province.”

Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS) is on high alert to handle any emergencies from the persistent rains. While the warning focuses on Gauteng, separate alerts note an Orange Level 5 for severe thunderstorms in Limpopo and Mpumalanga on November 24, 2025. This weather pattern underscores the need for caution amid South Africa's variable seasonal conditions.
