Son of former Matungu MP killed in Kisumu attack

Hanington Were, son of former Matungu MP David Were, was killed in a stabbing attack in Kisumu early on May 24. The incident has renewed concerns over rising insecurity in the area.

Hanington Were was ambushed shortly after midnight on May 24 while stepping out of his house with a friend in Robert Owuko Estate, Kisumu. Two men on a motorcycle attacked him, leaving him with fatal stab wounds to the back. He was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

David Were stated that his son arrived at the hospital around 8 pm and had already died from the injuries. Police have launched an investigation and are pursuing leads on the two suspects.

Residents in the area have blamed boda boda riders for enabling criminal gangs and pointed to poor street lighting as a factor allowing such attacks. They are urging the Kisumu County Government and security agencies to improve safety measures.
