Supergirl actor praises film's fidelity to comic source material

David Krumholtz, who plays Zor-El in the upcoming Supergirl film, has shared that the movie remains very true to its acclaimed comic book inspiration, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The actor highlighted the inclusion of Jason Momoa's Lobo alongside the core story from Tom King and Bilquis Evely's graphic novel. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El and is set for a June 26, 2026, theatrical release.

Background on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

The Supergirl film adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely's 2021 comic series, which presents a more cosmic and gritty take on Kara Zor-El compared to her cousin Superman. The story follows Kara on a space-faring adventure where she teams up with a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks vengeance for her family's killers. This character-driven odyssey emphasizes a harder-edged tone for the DC Universe heroine, diverging from traditional Earth-bound origins.

David Krumholtz's Comments

In a recent interview with Nerdtropolis, Krumholtz, portraying Kara's father Zor-El, emphasized the film's close adherence to the source. "It's very true to the graphic novel that it's based on, Woman of Tomorrow, very true, which is great. Plus, Lobo, which I can say, everybody knows that Jason Momoa is playing Lobo in it. So, it's that comic plus Lobo," he said. He kept his character's specifics under wraps but expressed enthusiasm: "I'll just say that I'm thrilled to be the next piece of telling the story of Krypton and further clarifying what the House of El is all about."

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has described the film as featuring "a much more hardcore character," aligning with the comic's haunted portrayal of Supergirl.

Cast and Production Details

Milly Alcock leads as Kara Zor-El, with Eve Ridley as Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts as villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Emily Beecham as Alura. Warner Bros. plans IMAX screenings for the June 26, 2026, debut, positioning it as the second theatrical project in DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
