A 32-year-old Swedish police officer from Eksjö died after being severely assaulted during a World Cup match in Copenhagen. A 19-year-old man has started a fundraiser that has collected over 880,000 kronor for the deceased's family.
Christian Zedig, 32, was at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen to watch the World Cup match between Norway and Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening. According to reports, he tried to stop a fight and was then severely assaulted. He later died at the hospital.
A suspected perpetrator turned himself in to Danish police on Friday morning. He denies the crime and was remanded in custody for 26 days until July 29.
19-year-old Oskar Persson from Nässjö started a fundraiser after reading about the incident. By 23:50 on Friday evening, it had collected over 880,000 kronor. The money will be transferred directly to Christian Zedig's wife when the collection ends.
National Police Chief Petra Lundh and Deputy National Police Chief Stefan Hector expressed sorrow over their colleague's death in a statement. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer have also offered condolences to the family.
