James Talarico, who has been described by The Daily Wire as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, said during a live taping of The Bulwark podcast in Dallas that undocumented students he taught were often his “most patriotic” students, and criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a “secret police” force.

James Talarico, a Texas Democrat running for U.S. Senate, said during a live taping of The Bulwark podcast in Dallas that undocumented students he taught while working as a middle-school teacher were often his “most patriotic” students.

“I taught a lot of undocumented students, and those students tended to be my most patriotic students,” Talarico said during the event, according to The Daily Wire.

Talarico continued that those students, in his view, believed in the United States as a place of opportunity “even when this country didn’t believe in them,” The Daily Wire reported.

The Daily Wire said the remarks were made during a live taping of The Bulwark podcast with host Tim Miller and that Talarico also criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a “secret police” force.

The comments circulated more widely after a March 20, 2026 social media post by the account Western Lensman that included video of the exchange, The Daily Wire reported.

The Daily Wire also pointed to earlier statements by Talarico about border policy, including remarks from what it described as a clip from a January Democratic primary debate in which he compared the southern border to a “front porch,” saying there should be “a giant welcome mat out front and a lock on the door.”

A similar line appears on Talarico’s campaign website, which says the border should be “like a front porch” with “a welcome mat out front and a lock on the door,” adding that the country can welcome refugees, asylum seekers and others who want to contribute while keeping out people who intend harm.

In another past clip cited by The Daily Wire, Talarico said people who commit violent crimes “should be deported immediately,” while arguing that law-enforcement resources should not focus on “hard-working members of our community.”

Reactions on X to James Talarico's statements are overwhelmingly negative from conservative users, who ridicule his claim that undocumented students were his 'most patriotic' and criticize his labeling of ICE as a 'secret police' force terrorizing communities. Supporters, including Talarico's own accounts, share clips emphasizing the need to reform ICE to prioritize serious criminals over families. High-engagement posts from right-leaning influencers amplify the controversy, questioning his fitness for Senate.

State Rep. James Talarico defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Texas Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on March 3, 2026, amid high Latino voter turnout in several counties. Crockett conceded the race the following morning, urging party unity. The victory raises hopes for Democrats in the deep-red state as Talarico prepares to face either Sen. John Cornyn or Attorney General Ken Paxton in November.

Andrew T. Walker, a Christian ethics professor, argues in a Daily Wire article that Texas state representative James Talarico employs Christianity as a rhetorical tool to advance progressive policies. Talarico, a Democratic Senate candidate, has gained viral attention for quoting Scripture and discussing Jesus frequently. Walker contends this faith serves more as electoral strategy than theological foundation.

After winning the Texas Democratic U.S. Senate primary last month, state Rep. James Talarico announced a record $27 million fundraising haul for the first quarter of 2026—the largest ever for a Senate candidate in an election year's opening quarter. The grassroots-driven funds, mostly small donations, bolster his general election bid against the winner of the ongoing GOP primary runoff between Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Following state Rep. James Talarico's win over U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the March 4, 2026, Democratic U.S. Senate primary, and Sen. John Cornyn's first-place finish short of a majority against Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP contest, new details emerge on record costs, party reactions, and a May 26 runoff outlook amid concerns over unity and funding.

Tom Homan, President Donald Trump's border czar, urged Fairfax County authorities to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement following recent murders allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants. Speaking on Fox News, Homan proposed arrangements similar to those he brokered in Minneapolis to facilitate the transfer of detainees. The comments came amid three high-profile killings in the sanctuary jurisdiction over the past month.
