Tim Cook says Apple price increases are unavoidable

Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned that rising costs for memory and storage chips will force price increases on the company's products.

Cook told The Wall Street Journal that the company has tried to absorb higher costs but can no longer do so. "Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable," he said. "We've been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable."

The comments come months before the expected launch of the iPhone 18 lineup. Cook did not specify which products or when the changes would take effect.

Higher demand for chips driven by AI data centers has outpaced supply, affecting costs across the tech sector. The impact is expected to last into 2028.

Microsoft has increased prices across its Surface PC lineup, with some models rising by up to $500, citing higher memory and component costs. The changes, now live on the Microsoft Store, affect current-generation hardware originally launched in 2024. Officials blame the hikes on a persistent RAM chip shortage driven by demand from AI data centers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that high memory costs will significantly impact the company's business in coming quarters. He highlighted supply constraints during the latest earnings call despite strong revenue growth. The issue stems from skyrocketing RAM prices driven by AI data center demand.

A Xiaomi executive warned on an earnings call that memory prices surging 'beyond imagination' are drawing smartphone makers into a long-term price-raising cycle, after which some players may suffer significant losses or even closure. The company reported a 27 percent year-on-year drop in fourth-quarter net profit.

Apple has stopped selling its cheapest $599 Mac mini, raising the starting price to $799 with 512GB storage. The change follows strong demand from AI users and supply constraints. CEO Tim Cook noted it may take months to balance supply and demand.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has suggested the company will introduce new approaches to console sales later this year amid rising hardware costs. In a Fortune interview, she pointed to challenges with RAM and storage prices that are now 2.75 times higher than at launch. Sharma said the firm is exploring options beyond price increases to keep consoles accessible.
