Toffoli to assume honorary presidency of USP-linked association

STF Justice Dias Toffoli has been invited to assume the honorary presidency of the Brasília Chapter of the Association of Former Students of USP's Law School starting in 2026. The invitation came from the entity's current president, Rui Caminha, emphasizing Toffoli's strong ties to the institution. The appointment is connected to the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of legal education in Brazil in 2027.

STF Justice Dias Toffoli will assume the honorary presidency of the Brasília Chapter of the Association of Former Students of the University of São Paulo's (USP) Law School in early 2026, with no specific date yet set for the inauguration ceremony. The invitation was extended by Rui Caminha, the current president of the association, who succeeded Paulo Henrique Pereira, now the national secretary of Consumer Affairs in the Ministry of Justice.

Graduated in 1991 from USP's Law School, established in 1827 and one of Brazil's most prestigious institutions, Toffoli has a notable history there. He served as director of the Centro Acadêmico XI de Agosto—the oldest in Brazil, founded in 1903—and represented former students on the faculty's congregation. Before his STF appointment, the association hosted a lunch in his honor and supported his nomination. "Minister Toffoli is a former student of USP's Law School and had a remarkable academic trajectory. [...] The justice is a great ‘franciscano,’ with a very strong bond to the university. His name is tied to a larger project: the celebration of the 200 years of legal courses in Brazil, in 2027," Caminha stated.

Founded in 1931, the association uses the term "antigos alunos" (former students) to emphasize the permanent link to USP, located in São Paulo's Largo de São Francisco. The law school is preparing events for the 200th anniversary of legal education in 2027, with a council including former President José Sarney, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, former Foreign Minister Celso Lafer, PSD leader Gilberto Kassab, and director Ana Elisa Bechara. Other notable alumni include STF Justices Alexandre de Moraes, Ricardo Lewandowski, and Celso de Mello, as well as former President Michel Temer.
