Trafikverket investigates bus crash on E45 outside Storuman

Trafikverket will investigate the bus crash on E45 outside Storuman, stating they followed all routines for snow removal and anti-skid measures. Police are examining the bus's speed and tires. Storuman municipality quickly provided food, shelter, and care for the injured passengers.

The bus crash occurred on November 22, 2025, on E45 outside Storuman in Västerbotten. A bus carrying 46 students overturned, resulting in numerous injuries, mostly minor with some moderate. No severe injuries were initially reported.

Trafikverket, responsible for road maintenance, states they handled snow removal and anti-skid measures according to protocol. "We know we maintained this road regarding snow plowing the same day," says Peter Jonsson, press officer at Trafikverket. The stretch had winter road conditions but was not extremely slippery, and it is a high-priority road in the region. "This is not a dangerous stretch that stands out," Jonsson adds. The accident site is not known as prone to crashes, unlike hotspots such as hills where trucks get stuck. Trafikverket is launching an investigation to identify any areas for improvement, aiming to complete it before Christmas.

Police have initiated a preliminary investigation into negligence in traffic and causing bodily harm. The bus has been seized for technical examination, including tires and speed analysis. "We will also analyze how fast it was driving," says Carl-Johan Ekelund, acting head of the local police area in southern Lapland. Seatbelt usage is being investigated through interviews.

In Storuman, the POSOM group was activated for psychological and social support. 46 passengers were treated at the local clinic, which entered disaster mode and reinforced with extra staff from Lycksele. "We managed to prepare sandwiches, blankets, and clear the parking lot before they arrived," says district doctor Sofie Lyhammar. The municipality arranged food and accommodation, including at the church hall. "Many were sad and shocked. We helped dry shoes and socks, gave them warm blankets, and took care of them," says Therése Mörtzell from the POSOM group. "I feel pride in the Storuman residents and their willingness to help. It warms the heart," she adds.
