20-year-old dies in chemical leak at Andheri workshop

A 20-year-old man has died and two others were hospitalized following a chemical leak in a jewellery workshop in Mumbai's Andheri MIDC area. The incident occurred when toxic fumes were released during waste cleaning. Police have launched an inquiry into the accident.

On Saturday afternoon, a tragic accident unfolded in the MIDC area of Andheri, Mumbai, claiming the life of 20-year-old Ahmed Hussain and leaving two others in hospital. Hussain was employed at a jewellery workshop in a two-storeyed structure located at Bhangarwadi, where he handled waste materials as part of his duties.

The incident took place around 4:55 pm when Hussain attempted to clean the waste by mixing it with water and sodium sulphate. According to police reports, he accidentally added an excess amount of the chemical, triggering the release of toxic fumes. Hussain inhaled the gas and collapsed immediately after screaming in distress.

His 17-year-old sister, Saba Shaikh, and 28-year-old neighbor, Naushad Ansari, heard the commotion and rushed into the room to help, only to inhale the fumes themselves and fall unconscious. Hussain's father, who was outside at the time, discovered the three individuals lying motionless and promptly alerted the police.

With assistance from officers, the victims were rushed to Holy Spirit Hospital. Tragically, Ahmed Hussain was declared dead on arrival. Saba Shaikh and Naushad Ansari are currently admitted and recovering from their injuries.

Senior Inspector Ravindra Wani of the MIDC police station confirmed the details, stating, “We have registered the incident and an inquiry is underway.” The case highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety in industrial zones like MIDC, where handling hazardous materials requires strict protocols to prevent such mishaps.
