Accident paralyses Nairobi-Nakuru Highway causing overnight traffic jam

A truck accident near Naivasha triggered a major traffic jam on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Friday night, stranding motorists for hours. The gridlock remained unresolved as of Saturday morning.

Motorists reported being stuck in freezing conditions for more than six hours after the collision caused a partial blockage that escalated into a full standstill. The jam began around 10pm on Friday and stretched for several kilometres in both directions.

Dela Comedian, a motorist caught in the snarl-up, said: “We have slept in traffic for over six hours.” Traffic from Nakuru built up near St Mary's Mission Hospital in Gilgil, while vehicles heading from Nairobi piled up near the Gilgil Weighbridge.

Emergency responders and police worked to clear the wreckage, but movement stayed severely restricted. Transport firms including Team Swat Sacco and Mash Poa warned passengers of delays to arrivals, departures and parcel services.

As of 10:12am on Saturday, KeNHA had not issued an update on when normal flow would resume.
