Ahmedabad mandates four-category waste segregation for residents and businesses

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has introduced new rules requiring all households and commercial units to separate waste into four categories starting immediately.

Residents must now sort waste into wet, dry, sanitary and special care categories before handing it to collection workers. Wet waste covers kitchen scraps while dry waste includes paper, plastic, glass and metal. Sanitary items such as diapers and pads require secure wrapping, and hazardous household materials fall under special care waste.

The rules apply across all seven zones and 48 wards of the city. Bulk waste generators, defined as those with over 20,000 square metres built-up area, daily water use above 40,000 litres or 100 kilograms of waste, must process biodegradable waste on site. Violations will be treated as contempt of a Supreme Court order under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation stated that the changes align with directives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Supreme Court. An awareness campaign will support implementation, and improper disposal such as burning or dumping in drains is now an offence.
