Air quality improves in Mexico City and Edomex, averting double no-drive day

Air quality in Mexico City and the State of Mexico improved, preventing a new ozone contingency activation amid a heat wave. At 3 p.m., only the Tlalpan station reported poor quality, Cuajimalpa good, and the rest acceptable. The Megalopolis Environmental Commission (CAMe) lifted the weekend contingency and keeps alerts for atmospheric stability conditions.

The phase 1 environmental contingency, lifted on Sunday, was not reactivated on Monday despite high pollution levels from a heat wave and anticyclonic system favoring ozone buildup.

The Hoy No Circula program applied normally on Tuesday, April 28, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. for vehicles with pink sticker and plate endings 7 or 8. Exemptions include motorcycles, electric vehicles, hybrid category I and II, 00 and 0 holograms, among others.

This marks the sixth contingency in 2026 in the Valley of Mexico, prior ones due to PM2.5 and ozone. CAMe forecasts atmospheric stability, weak winds, and temperatures above 30°C for the week of April 27 to May 1.

CAMe advised reducing emissions: limit car use, refuel gasoline outside peak hours, avoid aerosols and solvents, shorten showers, and repair gas leaks.

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) declared Phase 1 Environmental Contingency on Saturday, April 25, in Mexico City and Mexico State due to high ozone levels from a heat wave. Expanded vehicle restrictions apply today, Sunday, April 26, under the Double Hoy No Circula program from 5:00 to 22:00. Temperatures in CDMX will reach 30 to 32 degrees Celsius.

The Hoy No Circula program is operating normally this Saturday, May 16, across Mexico City’s 16 boroughs and 18 municipalities in the State of Mexico. The restrictions aim to reduce air pollution in the metropolitan area.

The Hoy No Circula program applies unchanged this Maundy Thursday, April 2, across 16 boroughs in CDMX and 18 municipalities in the State of Mexico, restricting vehicles with green stickers and plates ending in 1 or 2 from 5:00 to 22:00. The measure aims to cut air pollution in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. Line 2 of the Metro is under maintenance with RTP substitute service.

Mexico City's Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (Sgircp/SGIRPC) issued an alert for temperatures up to 31 degrees Celsius this weekend, particularly during Andrea Bocelli's free Romanza Tour concert at the Zócalo on Saturday, April 18. Very hot afternoon conditions are forecast with partly cloudy skies and possible light scattered rains at night. Officials recommend sunscreen, hydration, cotton clothing, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and street food due to spoilage risks.
