Alonzo Brown sentenced to 56 years for 2022 Las Vegas murders

A Nevada man has been sentenced to at least 56 years in prison for a series of murders he committed in Las Vegas in 2022. Alonzo Brown, now 22, pleaded guilty late last year and received the sentence on Wednesday. Prosecutors described his actions as those of someone who decided to become a serial killer.

Alonzo Brown carried out at least three murders over six months in 2022, beginning in January when he shot and killed 24-year-old Dae-von Lane, whom he knew, in the 5300 block of East Tropicana Avenue. In May, Brown killed 62-year-old Paul Viana as he waited at a bus stop along Tropicana Avenue. The following month, he shot 36-year-old Josue Chaparro-Montalvo, a stranger walking home after visiting a convenience store on the same avenue. Surveillance footage captured Brown stalking his victims prior to the attacks, which authorities described as random with no apparent motive. Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo stated at the sentencing, 'He just decided he was going to become a serial killer.' DiGiacomo detailed Viana's killing: 'He literally stalks the victim as the victim was waiting for a bus — and then just walks up to a stranger and executes him.' Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Captain Dori Koren commented in 2022 that the murders were 'very disturbing,' noting the suspect's stalking behavior on surveillance video. Brown, who was 18 at the time, later claimed in interviews that he was 'trying to figure out life' and not in a healthy mental state, saying, 'A normal, sane 18-year-old kid is not going to go ahead and wake up and go on a killing spree.' With credit for time served, Brown will not be eligible for parole until 2078.
