Amazon pharmacy expands same-day delivery to more US areas

Amazon has announced plans to extend its same-day prescription delivery service to about 2,000 additional communities, reaching over 4,500 cities and towns by the end of 2026. The expansion targets underserved regions, including parts of Idaho and Massachusetts affected by pharmacy closures. This builds on the service's growth since its 2020 launch.

Amazon Pharmacy, launched in 2020, currently provides prescription delivery to all 50 US states and Washington, DC, serving as an option for those in underserved areas or far from traditional pharmacies. The company announced on Wednesday its intention to add approximately 2,000 new locations for same-day delivery, bringing the total to more than 4,500 cities and towns by the end of 2026.

This expansion will introduce the service to Idaho and Massachusetts for the first time, focusing on regions impacted by pharmacy closures and limited access to care. Previously, same-day delivery availability has depended on the locations of Amazon's fulfillment centers, where it can establish pharmacies. The service also offers next-day delivery in some areas and pickup options at certain One Medical offices.

"By combining our pharmacy expertise with our logistics network, we're removing critical barriers and helping patients start treatment faster -- setting a new standard for accessible, digital-forward pharmacy care," said John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy, in a statement.

Supporting programs include RxPass, a $5 monthly subscription for Amazon Prime members launched in 2023, which provides access to over 50 common medications at a flat fee and offers savings of up to 80% on generics and 40% on brand-name drugs. Medicare recipients gained access to RxPass in 2024. In 2025, Amazon Pharmacy added a caregiver support feature, allowing families to manage subscriptions for relatives. The company also operates kiosks for prescription pickups in select clinic lobbies and plans further expansion of these this year.

Amazon has applied for pharmacy trademarks in the UK, Canada, and Australia since 2020 but has not yet extended the service internationally. By 2024, the pharmacy had reached nearly half of all US residents.
