Appeal court sharpens sentence in Karlstad school child porn scandal

The Court of Appeal for Western Sweden has increased the sentence against a former employee at Engelska skolan in Karlstad, from two years to two years and four months in prison, in a child pornography scandal. Victim 'Hanna,' who was secretly filmed during school time, is satisfied with the ruling and sees it as an end. The damages awarded to her were raised from 15,000 to 25,000 kronor.

In a high-profile child pornography scandal at Engelska skolan in Karlstad, a former employee was initially sentenced by Värmland District Court to two years in prison. The man had secretly filmed and photographed students, including 'Hanna,' during school hours and published images of her and 165 other victims online for child pornography purposes. The district court also ordered him to pay 15,000 kronor in damages to 'Hanna.'

The Court of Appeal for Western Sweden has now sharpened the sentence to two years and four months in prison, a ruling that 'Hanna' welcomes. 'It feels like one can start healing and see an end to this now,' she tells SVT Nyheter. The damages to her were simultaneously increased to 25,000 kronor.

The scandal, which involved films and images taken over eight years, has drawn significant attention in Karlstad. Related proceedings and appeals from victims have continued, but the prosecutor chose not to appeal the district court ruling. The decision marks a step toward justice for the victims in this serious criminal case at the International English School.
