Bishop Hieronymus Emusugut Joya of the Catholic Diocese of Maralal has suspended seven priests and announced strict new rules on conduct.
The action followed a four-page pastoral letter written on July 12. The bishop said an assessment conducted over nearly four years since October 2022 had revealed financial and administrative problems.
New rules require priests to return to their stations by 7 pm and ban alcohol consumption or private business activities. Laypeople are prohibited from staying overnight in priests' residences without permission.
The bishop said funds raised had transformed the diocese and that measures were taken after obtaining reliable information. The reforms aim to restore accountability and the faithful's trust.
